Oddities, Quirks, and Fun Facts of Fantasy Football


The Jaylen Samuels "Cheat Code" (Week 14, 2018): During his 2018 rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting tight end Vance McDonald was nursing an injury, and starting running back James Conner went down with a high ankle sprain. Yahoo classified Samuels as RB/TE eligible. Placing a starting NFL running back into a fantasy TE slot was a massive tactical advantage. In Week 14 against the Oakland Raiders, Samuels racked up 92 total yards (28 rushing, 64 receiving) on 18 touches with 7 receptions. In Week 15 against the New England Patriots, he rushed for 142 yards on 19 carries. This positional glitch sparked massive debates across Yahoo fantasy message boards, with many rival managers calling it unfair.


Note: I happened to be scanning my roster one afternoon and immediately noticed Samuels could play at two different positions. I promptly put him in my starting lineup and also alerted my nephew, who did the same. I won my game that weekend, and my nephew won several as well. I remember one upset Yahoo manager stating that he would quit the platform forever because of this quirk!



The Cancelled Bills vs. Bengals Game (Jan 2, 2023): Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on the field after making a tackle in the first quarter of the Monday Night Football broadcast. Paramedics performed CPR on the field before he was transported to the hospital. The NFL suspended and ultimately canceled the game. Because the matchup was never resumed, Week 17 stats for players in that game were frozen at the time of the stoppage. This left many fantasy managers—especially those relying on key Bengals like Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, or Joe Mixon—without expected points during the fantasy championship rounds. Hamlin made a miraculous recovery, returned to full-contact football the following season, and continues his NFL career.


Note: This game brought an end to my playoff run that season, as I had both Burrow and Chase in my starting lineup. I think the best takeaway, however, is that Hamlin ended up making a full recovery.



The Undefeated "Duderino" Collapse:  The phenomenon of the 13–0 or 14–0 team getting knocked out in their very first playoff game is one of fantasy football's most famous curses (often driven by late-season NFL player rests, unexpected injuries, or simple bad luck in single-elimination formats). I was playing in this particular league along with the Duderino and witnessed it firsthand. It was kind of humorous because he also talked a bit of trash on the eve of our fantasy playoffs. Never take anything for granted in fantasy football!


Tie Games:  These are exceedingly rare, but I have two ties in my overall win-loss column. The first one felt like divine intervention, as I was able to qualify for the playoffs in the final week of the season. I then went on to win the league championship with a very average record of 7 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie.

  Not too long ago, I logged onto there.com and began browsing the event schedule. I was shocked to see a buggy event listed as a tribute to Lars_lars, who had passed away in early November 2025. I do not know the details of his passing, but what I and everyone else in this world do know is he was taken from us much too soon. In one of my last chats with Lars, we discussed the resurgence of there.com this past May and summer. We talked about the influx of new people, some of whom stayed on and others who were mostly virtual tourists passing by. Odds and Ends...

  Now that the Fair is over, I wanted to look back and reflect on all the activities and events of the past couple weeks. I am really glad I decided to share my event space with diaryainzon and her Writing Club. I had a pretty large lot at one end of the fairgrounds, and collaborating with Di made things a lot more fun. Her gypsy-caravan vibe was a nice contrast to my event space that featured sports events, podcasts, and movies on a somewhat regular basis. My watch party for the Steelers-Texans game was a highlight during the fair. We started out with a small group of fans, some wearing Steelers gear. More people joined throughout the evening, and others drifted through and chatted for a while before departing. Geomite showed up wearing a number 77 Steelers jersey, and he proceeded to give the ladies in attendance black-and-gold cheerleading outfits. Amen, brother!
